Nerd Union brings out students’ inner-geek

Getting a nerd out of the house isn’t easy to do, business sophomore Alex Pennington said.

Unless it involves LARPing in 20 degree weather on a Sunday morning.

So that’s why Pennington created Nerd Union.

“The group itself is intended to bring together a group of people with like minds,” said Pennington, Nerd Union president. “People who are looking for a way to express their nerdy interests.”

The Nerd Union, which was organized at the beginning of the semester, recently received $100 from Student Government Association to purchase pool noodles, PVC pipes and duct tape to construct weapons for live action role-playing, or LARPing.

“I guess it was a hysterical motion,” Pennington said about SGA’s bill.

The group meets twice a week to express their inner-nerd through zombie-themed LAN parties, Mario Kart and now LARP events on occasion and when weather permits. LARPing is a role-playing game in which participants act out their character roles in a fictional setting.

About 11 students came out for the LARPing event Sunday morning. Next year, the club hopes to offer a LARPing event to the entire campus.

Pennington said the idea of a “Nerd Union” came about at the beginning of the semester after he spoke with a handful of freshmen from the Dean’s Scholars program.

“To know you have a group where you can go and there are people who think like you and can give you references,” Pennington said.“I think that’s what the group is really about. It’s getting those people together.”
