Local music and art abound at The Donut Whole

The Donut Whole has been serving up doughnuts, live music and art since owner Michael Carmody opened its doors in downtown Wichita in 2009.

This one-of-a-kind coffee shop serves as a local hangout spot for students and a stage for local bands and recording artists. It also houses an array of antiques, giving it a vintage, yet urban, vibe.

“We are a completely laid-back atmosphere, and we cater to pretty much everyone,” employee Caleb Rosencutter said.

He has worked for the Donut Whole since it opened.

“We get a really good mix of people in here, from families to college and high school students, and everywhere in between,” Rosencutter said.

Doughnuts are made daily and include unique flavors like maple bacon and fruity pebbles. Rosencutter said the business makes about 150 to 200 kinds of doughnuts.

“We like to keep it interesting by changing it up a lot,” he said.

They also serve more than 50 different sodas made with real sugar, a range of coffees from a full espresso bar, tea, milk teas, slushies and smoothies. All ingredients are bought locally.

“I love coming here with my friends late at night for doughnuts,” student Jessica Mitchell said. “It is a great hangout place and the doughnuts and drinks are amazing.”

The walls of the shop display antiques, mostly bought off the Internet. There are rustic traffic signs, a pinball machine and an Andy Warhol artwork of Jackie Kennedy. One unique piece, a wooden part of an amusement ride, came from Joyland, the Wichita theme park that closed several years ago.

“The big rooster on the roof, which is like our trademark, was bought on sale online,” Rosencutter said. “It kind of associates with breakfast.”

Local artists take the stage Friday and Saturday nights.

“It always surprises me when you go in and someone is performing,” junior engineering student Lauren Diec said. “I never expect it.”

The Donut Whole also features a local artist every Final Friday in their Brown Paper Bag Gallery. Artwork is put on display for a month and is available for sale.

The Donut Whole, 1720 E. Douglas Ave., is open from 6 a.m. to midnight every day and has a 24-hour drive-thru.
