Shocktoberfest tradition continues on campus

“Oh, the places you’ll go” with this year’s Shocktoberfest theme, “ObSeussed with Shocktoberfest.”

Every year, the event at Wichita State takes on a new motif. This year’s theme focuses on legendary children’s author Dr. Seuss.

Shocktoberfest features a week of activities and is held every year by the Student Activities Council. It originally began as a picnic during homecoming week for the football team. After the football program was canceled in 1987, homecoming was, too.

The SAC brought back the week in 1991 and turned it into a fall celebration.

SAC Campus traditions chair Amber Sevart said Shocktoberfest still has bonds to the homecoming celebration, but the activities are not associated with athletics anymore.

“It doesn’t have any athletic ties,” Sevart said. “It’s kind of like a homecoming for WSU, but since we don’t have a football team, it’s just a spirit week.”

One of the first events of the celebration is a green eggs and ham breakfast with WSU President John Bardo at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday morning in the Rhatigan Student Center. Bardo will make a speech at 11 a.m.

Sevart said that Songfest is probably the biggest part of the celebration.

According to the Shocktoberfest Introductory Packet, Songfest is a competition of five-minute lip-syncing and dance numbers performed by students, either as organizations or as friends.

This year’s Songfest takes place at the Hughes Metropolitan Complex on 29th and Oliver streets at 7 p.m. Oct. 28. The SAC asks that students attending on campus and ride one of the buses to the Metroplex to allow more parking for those with class there.

“They only have around 300 parking spaces, and there are also classes that night,” Sevart said. “There will not be room for everyone that goes to park there.”
