Women’s tennis sweeps competition

For Wichita State’s women’s tennis team, everything went their way at the Kansas State University Invitational in Manhattan, Kan., this weekend.

The Shockers hit the road Friday and started their season against the University of Nebraska at Omaha, winning five of six singles matches.

Montse Blasco-Fernandez was one of two Shockers to sweep her opponent 6-0, 6-0.

“It was solid and I was playing my game,” Blasco-Fernandez said.

Later that day, WSU played UMKC in doubles, taking all three and winning two of those three by the score of 8-1.

On day two, WSU played host school K-State in singles and doubles, as well as Omaha in doubles.

The Shockers once again won five of six doubles matches, led by sophomore Rebecca Pedrazzi, who was pushed to three sets and came away with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win in the one position against Amina St. Hill.

“I think it is good to play this type of match in the fall, because it gives you the chance to get ready for the spring season,” Pedrazzi said.

In doubles versus Omaha, Blasco-Fernandez and Julia Schiller led WSU in the one position and won 8-3. Wichita State won two of three doubles matches.

In the last doubles competition of the day, WSU played KSU, and, came away with two of three matches, with strong play from duo Satjaporn Mahajaroenkul and Summer Schlotterback, who won 8-4.

Finishing up the weekend Sunday morning, WSU played UMKC in singles and once more won five of six matches.

Pedrazzi defeated Dimitra Stravrianakou 6-1, 6-1 to take the invitational singles championship.

The team will be in action next at the Missouri Valley Conference Championships Oct. 4-6 in St. Louis.
