Bowles will not return to basketball program

After undergoing surgery last Thursday, men’s basketball freshman guard D.J. Bowles returned to Wichita in the hopes of rejoining the team for the upcoming 2013-14 season. It was announced today that Bowles has been denied medical clearance due to a cardiac condition.

“Our main concern is the health and well-being of D.J. for the rest of his life,” Director of Athletics Eric Sexton said in a press release. “He is an outstanding young man from a great family who has had a very traumatic 17 days.”

Bowles was taken to Via Christi on St. Francis on Tuesday, Sept. 3 after he blacked out and collapsed during a team practice. He remained at the hospital until Sunday, Sept. 8 where he underwent tests to find the cause of his blackout. Once released, Bowles traveled to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. where he underwent additional tests and eventually surgery to install an implantable cardio defibrillator.

According to the press release, Bowles’s four year scholarship will still be honored if he chooses to continue furthering his education.

“We hope that he will stay and complete his education at Wichita State, and have extended the commitment to honor his scholarship to he and his family,” Sexton said.

No further statement will be made about Bowles’s condition due to federal privacy laws.

It has yet to be announced if Bowles will accept the scholarship offer.
