National media needs to get its Shocker facts straight
ATLANTA—Nearly six hours of driving time, approximately 380 miles and probably more than a dozen Casey’s General Stores separate Fort Scott from Scott City, Kan. However, Sports Illustrated still couldn’t manage to figure out the right hometown for Wichita State guard Ron Baker.
Not that the national attention bothers WSU men’s basketball coach Gregg Marshall or his team. In fact, he would trade it for a year like this without question. But, when it comes down to getting the smallest facts straight, the national media needs to get with it.
Don’t get me wrong, I understand that it has been a long 19 days for college basketball reporters and analysts, but when it comes down to essential facts like a player’s hometown, there needs to be more attention to detail.
This one error wasn’t what upset me the most. It was, in fact, a tweet sent out by Sports Illustrated’s Andy Gray claiming that Xavier McDaniel played in a 1985 Final Four game against Tulsa.
Wait, what?
First of all, in the 1984-85 season, the Shockers played Tulsa in early February. And, the last time the Shockers were in the Final Four was 1965. McDaniel would have been 2.
Now, from what I understand, none of these factual errors were in print. And, online mistakes can be fixed. But, a simple Google search can answer virtually any basketball related question someone might have.
Before you tell me I’m wrong for criticizing big name media outlets, I know these people are busy and probably haven’t given a single thought to Wichita State or the basketball program since 2006. But, this is the Final Four and, no matter how much they want to ignore it, the Shockers are here.
In the Sports Illustrated article that was earlier criticized, look on the bright side, at least they got that Baker was from Kansas. And, Fort Scott is only a few inches away from Scott City … on a map.
