War song builds on ‘Play Angry’ mantra

Ask Pitt, ask Gonzaga, ask La Salle, or ask Ohio State. War with the Wichita State Shockers is a seemingly terrible idea. WSU is doing everything it can: calling on every player, fan and even the WSU pep band. Director Matt Esau brought a new pep band song, “War,” to fire up the fans and team, and it worked.

“After our win against Gonzaga it is very clear to the band that the team loves the song,” Kenneth Tysick, a sophomore mellophone player, said. “When we play the song for our team it gives them the energy to play angry.”

The song was originally recorded by the Rebirth Brass Band, but has since been borrowed by multiple pep bands. It seems to be a hit in Wichita. Head coach Gregg Marshall was seen grooving with the bass line when the team launched into an on-court dance party after the huge win over Gonzaga. With the success of the basketball team you hear:

“You don’t wanna go to war with the Shockers, don’t start no stuff, won’t be no stuff.”

You know where you are and for whom you’re screaming.
