SAC scales up tradition with fitness events

A climb on the rock wall seems to clash with the 85th annual Hippodrome at first glance, but it doesn’t.

Keeping with Hippodrome’s fitness-based theme of “Gettin’ Fit in the WU.S.A,” “Huxley’s Big Climb” encouraged students to engage in some kind of physical activity. In this case, rock climbing.

The event was the first of three smaller events that are taking place surrounding the traditional skit competitions.

Meg Junk, program adviser for Student Involvement, said they thought about only doing the skits, but that only larger groups get the necessary people and funds together to participate.

Although anyone, including a small group of friends on campus, can get involved in the skits, Junk said that typically only the Greek organizations and larger Recognized Student Organizations get involved.

“We want to make sure all students get the chance to enjoy Hippodrome,” Junk said.

As for rock climbing, Junk said that they wanted to do something new that students would enjoy.

“You can come up with 100 ideas, but what are ideas that we haven’t done before and students will show up for?” Junk said.

As it turns out, sophomore Ashlyn Driskill said that rock climbing is an activity that requires little skill to have fun at.

“I sucked at it, but it was really fun,” Driskill said.

Hippodrome’s events continued on Tuesday with P90huXley, where students were invited to play Wii and Xbox Kinnect fitness games at the wRECk Center in RSC 223.

The first skit performances will take place Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the CAC Theater.
