WSU’s Pride Week to conclude with third annual drag show
A little or a lot of gender bending is going on at Wichita State. It depends on your point of view.
A drag show is set for 8 p.m. Friday at the Campus Activities Center Theater to celebrate the end of Pride Week.
WSU assistant sociology professor Jennifer Pearson said drag shows have been part of the LGBT community for some time.
“There’s certainly not a representative of LGBT individuals, and they’re definitely not the same as transgender identity issues,” Pearson said. “But drag shows are a way of celebrating gender bending.”
Brad Thomison, the alumni adviser of That Gay Group, is the show’s host along with his alter ego Divinity Masters.
“That show is a pretty big event that takes up much of my attention,” he said.
The best part of the show for Thomison is providing people entertainment they have never seen before.
“We are providing an opportunity for people who have never been to one or been afraid to go to one, and we are able to provide a safe environment where they know they’re going to be fine,” Thomison said.
He expects a large crowd.
“We’ve had over 200 people respond on Facebook,” Thomison said. “And I have other people in my circle of friends who aren’t on Facebook, but they’re still planning to attend.”
Thomison said he expects the performers to be in their best form.
“We always do our best, and I think this one is gonna be head and shoulders above where we’ve been in the past because we’re in a groove, we know what to expect, we’re familiar with the space and we know the Wichita State audience is one of the best,” Thomison said.
Thomison encourages everyone interested to attend.
“I would say if you’re questioning whether or not to come, make plans to come,” Thomison said. “It’s a great show, and it’s fun for everybody, no matter if it’s your first time or your hundredth time.”
