WSU volleyball headed back to NCAA tournament

Wichita State will return to action on Nov. 30 in the 2012 NCAA Tournament in Lawrence, Kan., where it will face Arkansas.

Creighton upset WSU volleyball again, this time in the finals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in Springfield, Mo. Instead of forcing the Bluejays into five sets, the Shockers were swept 25-18, 25-20 and 25-23.

“I never felt we had any energy,” coach Chris Lamb said. “Big picture, we came in trying to win this and improve our status, and I feel we did that. But we were flat tonight and I’m not happy about it.”

Junior Chelsey Feekin led the Shockers with 21 assists while freshman Ashlyn Driskell had a team-high nine kills. Still, that was not enough to hold off Creighton as they took off to an 11-7 lead in the first set.

WSU battled back with several kills by Driskell until it came within one point of the Bluejays, 17-16. Creighton only allowed the Shockers to score two more points before shutting them down in the first set.

WSU jumped ahead in the second set with a 4-1 lead over the Bluejays. Creighton answered back 7-6. Shocker attack errors pushed the Bluejays to 15-11 before a point rally tied the game 18-18. Feekin led WSU with three kills and five assists. Creighton won the set, giving them a 2-0 advantage.

Junior Ashley Andrade had three kills opening the third set, pushing WSU to a 14-9 lead with the help of junior Elizabeth Field and Feekin. Freshman Katie Reilly and senior Emily Adney kept up the Shocker momentum with a kill each, leading the Bluejays 19-12. Creighton came back late in the set to win 25-23 over the Shockers.

Adney and Feekin were given first team All-Missouri Valley Conference volleyball honors and Field made second team. Driskell made All-Freshman team.
