Campers get taste of collegiate athletics with Gregg Marshall’s basketball camp
This past week Wichita State basketball coach Gregg Marshall and his staff hosted their final Gregg Marshall Shocker Basketball Camp of the summer. The camp treated players between the ages of six and 16 to a variety of activities every afternoon last week.
“We split the campers up into three different leagues,” Shocker manager Chad Gibney said. “Ages 6 through 9 were in the high school league, ages 10 to 12 were in the college league and campers between the ages of 13 and 16 were in the NBA league.”
Marshall, along with his coaching staff, players, managers and area coaches, helped lead the camp that focused a lot on individual instruction. WSU seniors Carl Hall and Demetric Williams were among the players who helped run the camp.
“The camp workers did lots of individual instruction focusing on ball work and shooting,” Gibney said. “Coaches also went into different demo drills to show and teach the campers different things.”
All the work the campers put in during the week culminated in contests at the end of the camp, which was their favorite part of the camp.
“The majority of campers loved the individual drills we did at the camp,” Gibney said.
On the last day of camp, campers competed in six different timed drills to test their skills. If a camper earned a top time in a drill, their name was put up on the camp’s record board.
The camp concluded with a five-on-five tournament within each division. The tournament teams had a coach who was one of the camp workers.
“I think everybody’s favorite part was the five-on-five tournament,” Gibney said. “At the end of a long, fun week, it showed who the best teams were in each league.”
