Events to raise awareness for human trafficking

Robert Hite January 21, 2016

Going to a gym to work out could make a difference for human trafficking victims during the Center for Combating Human Trafficking’s annual Human Trafficking Awareness Month.

The center organized five activities ranging from a documentary film open to the public, to a seminar by invitation only and to the center’s all-day conference requiring registration this month for anyone interested in the topic.

“It’s kind of two-fold,” said Bailey Patton Brackin, CCHT volunteer and outreach coordinator. “We want to use it to raise awareness. We want to provide specific actions people can use in their lives to combat human trafficking. That’s why we offer a variety of activities.”

Brackin said human trafficking is a growing illegal industry that many people do not realize occurs in Wichita, in Kansas and in the U.S.

“It’s growing faster than trafficking arms and illegal drugs,” she said.

Brackin also said the idea of being healthy and health conscious contributes to one’s self image.

“We know that promoting holistic health and self-esteem reduces exploitation,” she said.

Brackin said some people have heard of human trafficking, while others work daily with survivors on a volunteer and professional basis, but are always learning.

“You can never know everything,” she said.
