Shockers finish 2-1 at Marquette Invitational

Wichita State’s volleyball team travelled to Milwaukee this weekend and improved its season record to 9-5.

The Shockers faced the Marquette Golden Eagles Friday night and triumphed after competing in a 5-set match. Senior Katie Reilly reached a career high of 20 kills with only one error and a .487 hitting percentage.

The games’ scores went back-and-fourth every set, with each competitor beating the other by only a few points each. The biggest set score difference was only seven points in the third, and as few as two points in the final set to 15.

WSU took the first, third, and last sets 25-21, 22-25, 25-18, 26-28, 15-13.

Saturday brought a loss to the Shockers against IUPUI, 3 sets to 1. Abbie Lehman led the Shockers with 16 kills, setter Emily Heibert had 44 assists while libero Dani Mostrom made 12 digs.

The Jaguars came out on top the first set, were defeated by WSU in the second, and then ran with the final two, 25-21, 19-25, 25-22, 25-17.

The Shockers faced Albany Saturday night and won the match three sets to one. Freshman Shimen Fayad tallied a career high of 13 kills and an additional 10 digs to lead the Shockers. Heibert scored a double-double, earning 49 assists and 14 digs. The Shockers won 25-18, 23-25, 25-17, and 25-12.

Wichita State hosts its first Missouri Valley Conference match-ups of the season on Thursday and Friday at a home tournament against Indiana State and Illinois State. The games will be broadcast on ESPN3.
