The Student Senate voted Wednesday night to amend the rules of a scholarship originally intended for undocumented students, and broaden the scope of students who could receive it.
The Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc., agreed to a partnership with SGA in 2018, in which the fraternity would raise money for the scholarship, and the Student Government would match the funds.
The initial bylaws stated the scholarship fund’s purpose was to “provide undocumented students and/or students involved with the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program financial assistance to eligible University students on a yearly basis.”
Under the new amendment, the funds will now provide financial assistance for members of the student body who exhibit financial need.
The legislation passed with 24 votes in favor and three abstentions.
Students can share their thoughts on legislation at weekly Student Senate meetings during the public forum period. Senate meetings are on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. in the Rhatigan Student Center, room 233.
All senate meetings are live-streamed on SGA’s YouTube channel.
