Wichita State’s Student Senate voted Wednesday night to approve a bill that will fund a vision care pop-up clinic on campus. Before the vote, Director of Health and Wellness Anoushka Raju spoke before the senate in support of the bill.
“Access to healthcare is not just about treatment, it’s about giving students the ability to fully show up in their daily lives,” Raju said. “Vision care directly impacts how students learn, engage and navigate both their academic and personal environments.”
According to Raju, the bill was created in response to Student Health Services’ Quality and Utilization Report, which identified vision care as the most requested service among students.
The initiative will start by providing free eye exams and glasses for 50 students on a first come, first serve basis.
“This establishes a foundation for more accessible and supportive wellness culture on campus, one where students are not held back by preventable barriers,” Raju said.
Three senators, all of whom wear glasses, spoke in affirmation of the bill, which passed unanimously
“I’m gonna speak in affirmation, I agree, I’m incredibly impressed by how much information has been included in the bill,” Liberal Arts and Sciences Senator Braeden Miller said.
