Bryce Heard, a 6-foot-6 soon-to-be-junior wing, committed to Wichita State out of the transfer portal Thursday morning, which was first reported by Sam Kayser on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Heard comes to WSU after one season at North Carolina State and one at Dayton. He will have at least two seasons of eligibility remaining.
The Wichita Eagle reported Saturday that Heard took an official visit with the Shockers last weekend. With Heard’s commitment Thursday, head coach Paul Mills is now 3-for-3 on commitments from portal prospects who have visited campus this offseason.
Former Chattanooga guard Jordan Frison and former George Mason guard Jahari Long recently signed with Wichita State, as well, after meeting with the coaching staff and seeing the facilities.
But Heard, a Chicago native, comes to WSU as a bit more of an unknown than Frison and Long, who are entering their senior and graduate seasons, respectively.
Heard received only 6.3 minutes a game while at NC State. His production increased while at Dayton, which reached the National Invitation Tournament quarterfinals last season and finished 25-12 and in fourth place in the Atlantic 10.
Heard averaged 18.4 minutes per game during his time with the Flyers and saw his scoring average increase from 1.2 points a game as a freshman to 6.6 points as a sophomore.
His shooting numbers jumped, too, as he went from 31.8% from the floor, 20% from 3-point range and 66.7% from the foul line at NC State to 43.8% from the field, 36.6% from deep and 79.1% at the line with Dayton last season.
The transfer portal entry window officially closed Tuesday. So now, the Shockers will only have to worry about making final roster additions.
Ten players from last year’s roster are set to return. And with the addition of Heard, Frison and Long, they’ll only need to sign two more players to complete it.
