Drain the ‘Canes: Shockers topple Tulsa
Forwards shine in 80-53 victory over Tulsa
Junior forward Darral Willis (21) and teammate Markis McDuffie celebrate a play in the first half of Wednesday’s game against Tulsa. McDuffie, a sophomore forward, and Willis each posted their career-bests in points.
Nearly a year ago, then ranked No. 9 Wichita State fell to a Tulsa team that sported seven seniors. Wednesday, the Shockers flipped the script.
The Shockers defeated the Golden Hurricanes 80-53 in a game where forwards shined.
Sophomore Markis McDuffie and juniors Darral Willis and Zach Brown each scored double-digits.
McDuffie and Willis each had career nights in scoring. McDuffie led all scorers with 18 points and seven rebounds, Willis added 16 — each one a career best. Brown added 15 after connecting on three of four three pointers — one point shy of his own career-best.
“It was just a day for me, Darral and Markis,” Brown said. “I say everyone is gonna have a day like that — that’s just who we are. We play 10 to 12 guys a game, so everybody’s gonna have that chance to do something big to help the team in any game.”
WSU head coach Gregg Marshall said a different group of players have risen to the top in production in every game this season.
“First game was the post players, second game was the guards, and tonight’s game were the forwards,” Marshall said. “They stole the show.”
WSU gained possession at tip-off, quickly getting on board with a layup from junior forward Rashard Kelly. Tulsa answered back with a dunk and a free throw, and for the first time all season, the Shockers trailed.
Tulsa’s lead was short-lived, as the Shockers took back the lead off a jump shot by redshirt junior Shaquille Morris.
With 4:14 left in the first half, McDuffie gave WSU their largest lead of the first half — up 17 points. The Shockers entered the half leading by 14.
The second half was no different. WSU went on a 14-0 run with points largely contributed by Brown’s two threes and an and-one three-point play.
WSU emptied most of their bench playing 14 of their roster. Collectively they posted 52 points from the bench — through three games they’re averaging more than 50 points on the bench.
Redshirt senior Zach Bush scored the final points of the game with a three-pointer capping the 27-point victory.
“A lot of guys do things well, different things well,” Marshall said. “It’s difficult at times to have the right five out there, but by in large you know with that kind of depth you’re gonna get five guys that are gonna compete hard on all three phases to help us win.”
WSU will play their final game before competing in the Battle for Atlantis series in the Bahamas when they take on Maryland Eastern Shore University at 2 p.m. Sunday in Charles Koch Arena.
