Shockers win weekend series 2-1 after Friday’s blowout
The Shockers won the homestand on Sunday when they defeated Tulane 8-2 to take the series 2-1. WSU is now 22-7 after their second series in the American Athletic Conference this season.
On Friday, the team struggled to catch up with Tulane as they had scored 11 runs in just the second inning, while the Shockers couldn’t score until the third.
WSU had a harder start at the plate until the bottom of the fifth when they brought three runs home.
Junior Alec Bohm doubled to right field with an RBI for juniors Greyson Jenista to advance to third and Travis Young to score at home.
Junior Josh DeBacker doubled to left center field with two RBI for Bohm and Jenista to score, but the Shockers were still behind 16-4.
Bohm and DeBacker were team leaders, recording four RBI each over the entire weekend. Tulane put up three more runs in the top of the seventh, giving them the win 19-4.
The tides turned on Saturday when the Shockers came back and were better at the bat, and freshman starting pitcher Liam Eddy went for seven innings and recorded six strikeouts.
In the bottom of the third, WSU put up four runs, then adding another in the fourth when Jenista flied out to center field on a sacrifice fly and DeBacker scored at home.
Later in the fifth, Tulane scored, but WSU scored another two runs. DeBacker singled to center field with two RBI, letting Young and senior Trey Vickers score.
Again in the sixth, the Shockers scored their last two runs. Young singled to shortstop with an RBI.
Junior Mason O’Brien advanced to second, Bohm took third and scored on a throwing error, and then Jenista scored at home.
The Shockers finished out on Saturday in the lead 9-3, and took the series on Sunday.
On Sunday, sophomore starting pitcher Tommy Barnhousewent for five innings and recorded six strikeouts.
The team started off strong at the plate in the first inning. Vickers singled to center field with an RBI, for Bohm to take second and Jenista scored at home.
Then O’Brien doubled to left center field with two RBI, letting Vickers and Bohm score at home
Later in the third, WSU had some more momentum at the bat. Bohm hit a home run out of left center field, keeping the Shockers in the lead 4-0.
In the bottom of the eighth, senior Gunnar Troutwinereached on a fielder’s choice with an RBI for junior Luke Ritter to score.
Then Vickers singled to center field with an RBI for Jenistato score at home the last run of the game.
The Shockers are in action again at Oklahoma State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. On Friday, WSU starts their next home series against UConn at 6 p.m., continuing through Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
