Softball falls to Oklahoma State 4-3

Wichita State got on the bus to Stillwater, Oklahoma, on Wednesday morning in hopes of getting back to their winning ways. The trip back home became more difficult to sink in as the Shockers fell short Wednesday night to Oklahoma State, 4-3.

While the Shockers hit .266, seven of their hits only came up as singles. Brittany Fortner was the only batter in the Wichita State lineup to reach extra bases.

Randee O’Donnell gave the Cowgirls a more than comfortable cushion in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Her grand slam homerun scored the first four runs of the game and would put the Shockers in a 4-0 deficit entering the top of the third inning.

A Cacy Williams single scored Wichita State’s first run in the third inning, cutting the Oklahoma State lead 4-1. Mackenzie Wright’s groundout to shortstop would score the Shocker’s second run of the game during the top of the fifth inning.

Fortner’s double cut the Oklahoma State lead 4-3 in the sixth inning, but the Shockers did not capitalize off of their eight hits on the night.

Williams finished getting two hits in her three at bats while Ashley Johnson managed to get hits in both of her at bats to go along with scoring a run.

Brandi Needham gave Oklahoma State five productive innings, striking out five batters while only coming up with two earned runs.

Going in for Jenni Brooks in the middle of the second inning, Katie Malone did not give up a run while she was on the mound for Wichita State. Allowing one hit during her 4.1 innings, Malone struck out three batters while facing 16.

Wichita State (9-9) comes home for a three game home-opening series against Northern Colorado on Saturday. A doubleheader will take place at Wilkens Stadium at noon Saturday and first pitch will be at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
