Volleyball starts season 2-1 at Rainbow Wahine Invitational
Shocker volleyball traveled to Honolulu, Hawaii, for the fourth time in program history this weekend to start the 2015-16 season with a 2-1 winning record.
WSU competed against Oregon State, No. 18 Hawaii and Idaho.
On Friday, the Shockers swept the 2015 Sweet 16 team, Oregon State, in three matches by scores of 25-23, 26-24 and 25-19.
Outside hitter Abbie Lehman led the team with 12 kills in the match, along with two blocks. Outside hitter Shimen Fayad started off her career with a double-double (10 kills, 11 digs). Setter Emily Hiebert had 36 assists and libero Dani Mostrom had a match total of 19 digs.
WSU won one out of four sets against Hawaii in their second match of season play Saturday by scores of 26-24, 20-25, 20-25 and 19-25. Lehman had a career-high 17 kills, hitting .516 and receiving eight blocks. Hiebert had 42 assists (a team high), and Mostrom had 23 digs. A service ace by outside hitter Jody Larson gave Wichita State the win in the first set.
The Shockers faced off against Idaho on Sunday. WSU beat Idaho in all three sets by scores of 25-16, 25-22, and 25-18.
Looking ahead, Wichita State travels to the College Station, Texas, for the Texas A&M Invitational Friday (Abilene Christian, New Mexico State, Texas A&M), and will play their home-opener at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 10 against South Dakota State in the Shocker Volleyball Classic.
