Shockers snap 7 game losing streak
Despite playing on turf, the Shockers stomped a mud hole in the Central Michigan University Chippewas at Tyler Field Sunday.
Wichita State had 13 hits off their 33 at bats resulting in a 10 run victory snapping a seven game losing streak.
The hitting frenzy began when Willie Schwanke tripled in the third inning off a line drive to left field. Then baseball fans saw a rare play when CMU’s Jason Gamble errored with a balk, sending Schwanke home.
CMU made up for Gamble’s error when Daniel Jipping homered in the top of the fourth. The homerun brought the game to 1-1 and from there, WSU took control of the game.
Bottom of the fifth inning, Shockers bring in a five hit, four run inning. Instead of swinging for the fences, Shockers bunted twice and littered the outfield with hits, spreading CMU’s defense and confusing their infield. Tinkham doubled with a hit down left field line bringing in two runs.
Once again, CMU seemed unphased in the sixth when Joe Houlihan hit a three run homer bringing the game back to a tie at 5-5.
Bottom of the 7th, bases loaded, WSU’s Daniel Kihle hit a bomb into left center bring home two runs. The Shockers closed out the seventh with five hits and five runs gaining the lead at 10-5, where they stayed at until game end.
Shocker fan David Weihe has been watching this year’s season closely. He liked how the year started, but has seen a constant struggle ever since the second game. This game seemed to bring hope back for him.
“Well, they’ve got their struggles” Weihe said, “But it looks like they got their hitting sticks today.”
Kevin Mode watched the game from the outfield grass and said it was a great idea to come watch the Shockers.
“I think they’re gonna come on” Mode said, “They’re just waiting to erupt.”
Sundays game against the CMU seemed to be what the Shocker fans were waiting for. The team has games at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday this week at Eck Stadium.
