Second annual King of Hearts Pageant tonight

Alpha Phi is hosting their second annual King of Hearts Pageant tonight at the CAC Theater.

Alpha Phi has picked six contestants from fraternities around campus. Among the contestants is sophomore David Brink.

Brink is an exercise science major and said “Go Red Week” hits close to home. He was scouted by the president of Alpha Delta Theta and said he is excited to join the cause.

Brink’s brother was diagnosed with a heart disease at a young age, resulting in open-heart surgery that saved his life.

“It was a scary time for us,” he said.

Brink said he feels like heart health awareness is incredibly important. He said if wasn’t for heart health education, he doesn’t know what would have happened to his brother.

The fraternities and sororities here on the Wichita State campus participate in fundraisers year long. Alpha Delta Theta participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge last summer.

“I feel like what I’m doing is raising a lot of awareness, and that is important,” Brink said.

The King of Hearts contestants have Facebook pages with a bio, video and photos. Each “like” received earns the men points toward the competition.

Voters can check-in under a contestant’s name at Chipotle, the info booth or at the pageant to earn points for the men, as well. Fifty percent of proceeds when a meal is purchased from Chipotle goes toward the philanthropy.

Students can expect to see the contestants compete in events like Group Dance, Q&A, Talent and Bordeaux Accessory.

Marie Brewer, vice president of marketing for Alpha Phi, said the proceeds from “Go Red Week” will be given to the Alpha Phi Foundation, primarily providing cardiac care for women, as well as the American Heart Association.

The pageant will take place tonight at 6:30 p.m. tonight. For more information, contact Brewer at [email protected].
