WSU splits weekend road trip

The Wichita State women’s basketball team moved to 17-4 after winning and losing one game over the weekend.

The Shockers spent the weekend on a road trip playing key conference games midway through the season.

The weekend began with a win against Northern Iowa.

Wichita State cruised to a double-digit victory by jumping ahead early and securing a 29-12 lead by halftime.

It was a balanced attack from the Shockers, who had four of its five starters scoring more than ten points. Michaela Dapprich led the attack with 16 points and was a force in the paint. Along with her contribution, WSU outscored UNI 46-15.

The Shockers left Cedar Falls hoping to stay perfect in the Missouri Valley Conference, but they had a tough opponent in Drake Sunday afternoon.

It was a battle between the top two teams in the MVC. Before the game, both teams were undefeated in the conference, and afterward, Drake took the top spot in the conference.

In a game where the lead changed 12 times, Drake was able to outlast the Shockers. The Bulldogs led early and ended the half up 29-27.

Although WSU was able to force turnovers and jump out to leads in the game, their offense stagnated due to poor shooting.

Drake was able to stay with the Shockers and took advantage of WSU’s offensive droughts.

Offensively, Michaela Dapprich led the team with 19 points, but it was not enough to stop Drake, which got points from the bench and starters.

With 3:40 left to go in the game, WSU took a 61-54 lead. This looked like the Shockers’ final push, but the team was unable to score again for the rest of the half, and Drake rallied to win.

Wichita State is now 17-4 on the season and 8-1 in the MVC. Their next game is against Missouri State Feb. 8 at Charles Koch Arena.
