Gamefest: ‘A nerd within the nerds’

Wesley Alexis’s fingers move in rapid fire. A punch here. A kick there. In frustration, he bites his lip. He breaks a sweat.

Minutes later, Alexis comes out on top in this match of the Super Smash Bros. tournament Friday night at Shocker Sports Grill & Lanes.

One down. Four to go.

“I’ve played Super Smash Bros. sometimes for six hours straight,” Alexis said. “I’m totally a nerd within the nerds … I’m sort of fan-girling.”

The Wichita State Nerd Union, Student Activities Council and International Education came together to organize Gamefest, in which students play a variety of electronic and board games and enjoyed free refreshments, bowling and billiards.

Shocker Sports Grill & Lanes hosted the event and streamed the men’s basketball game versus New Mexico State live.

“It’s big time Shocker spirit with basketball back in action,” said Rich Renollet, director of Shocker Sports Grill & Lanes. “It’s neat because we provide a very unique setting for students to interact socially. They get to know different people … and really I think it gets students connected and engaged on campus.”

Students crammed into the gaming area for a Halo tournament.

Others gathered in a lounge to play games like Cards Against Humanity and Connect Four. The men’s basketball game played over the speakers.

Renollet said each of the home and away basketball games will be streamed live at Shocker Sports Grill & Lanes for watch parties.
