Next on Netflix

You’re busy. So let us here at the Sunflower tell you about three can’t-miss shows and movies available on Netflix. Some episodes are sad, some are happy and some have sparked controversy and social reform.

With fall break upon us, here are shows and movies that will entertain you in your time away from school.

‘Dear Zachary: A letter to a son about his father’

“Dear Zachary” starts very slow and with great tragedy. Kurt Kuenne, the voice and director of the film, is grieving for the tremendous loss of his best friend, Andrew Bagby. Bagby and Kuenne grew up together. Kuenne, destined to be a filmmaker, would cast Bagby in all his films growing up, and the two spent a great deal of time together. Bagby was allegedly murdered by his girlfriend, Shirley Jane Turner. Turner turns out to be pregnant with Bagby’s son, Zachary. So, a grieving Kuenne sets out to capture and memorialize video of what Bagby left behind. Make sure to grab a tissue box before settling in on “Dear Zachary.” Despite it being incredibly sad, it’s a can’t-miss, well-done 93 minutes. It’s a true tribute from a best friend.

‘Orange is the New Black’

Piper is mad. Piper didn’t mean to hide the drugs in her suitcase and didn’t really know what her girlfriend, Alex, was doing. Now Piper is in deep trouble and has to leave everything behind to go pay for her mistake.

“Orange is the New Black” can only be found on Netflix and has become widely popular among Netflix fans and critics. The show, based on the creator’s real experience in a women’s prison, has even sparked widespread prison reform. The show depicts Piper and the journeys of the women of the prison.

There are some vulgar moments on the show, which is why it’s only offered on Netflix. There is no filter whatsoever. So if you are more conservative, keep the remote handy and just fast forward through some of the more graphic content.

There is more good content than bad in the series. It is fulfilling to see how each of the characters got to the point where they had to do time in prison, demonstrated nicely by the directors. Both seasons of the show are available on Netflix.

‘Gilmore Girls’

Actress Lauren Graham will always be best known for the seven years she spent as Lorelei on the hit Warner-Bros. series, “Gilmore Girls.”

In “Gilmore Girls,” Graham plays a 30-something, raising her gifted teenage daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel). When the show came out in 2000, it was pre- Teen Mom 1,2 and 3 era, and a lot of people weren’t really talking about teen pregnancy. While the show is fictional, it still shows the struggles Lorelei faces raising Rory physically, financially and emotionally. With a supporting cast of Bledel, Melissa McCarthy and the Saw trilogies’ Scott Patterson, the show is full of dramatic moments and witty banter with an all-star cast. All seven seasons are now available on Netflix.
