Pumped up jams at SongFest

This year’s annual SongFest packed the Orpheum Theatre and was full of student energy and Shocker spirit.

SongFest, a five-minute lip syncing and dance competition, wraps up the university’s week-long Shocktoberfest. This year’s theme focused on Space Jam, the popular 1996 sports family comedy film.

Joseph Shepard, this year’s host, had the Twitter scene buzzing with crowd support.

“Hosting SongFest was a surreal experience,” Shepard said. “The audience was very excited to be there, which in return made me excited to be the host.”

With live tweeting, shout-outs and even a Nae Nae competition, Shepard brought a fresh energy that had spirits high.

The Student Activities Council Twitter page shouted out to Shepard multiple times for being an outstanding emcee, saying the crowd loved him.

It was Shepard’s first year hosting the event, and many students thought he brought a creative new energy to the program.

Kiah Duggins, an economics major at Wichita State, said she has attended SongFest the last two years, and noticed the difference.

“Joseph’s hosting was my favorite part of Songfest,” Duggins said. “His Carlton dance and Nae Nae competition were hilarious, and they really got the crowd pumped up.

“SongFest was so creative this year, and I loved how it showcased Wichita State’s Greek Unity.”

Winners in the women’s category were Delta Delta Delta in third place, Kappa Kappa Gamma in second place and Delta Gamma in first place.

In the men’s category, Beta Theta Pi took third, Phi Delta Theta took second and Sigma Phi Epsilon took first place.

The Vietnamese Student Association took first place in the student organizations category.  Other announcements included the introduction of the Man and Woman of the Year finalists. Those winners will be announced at a banquet next week.

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion was the winner of the door-decorating contest.

Delta Gamma, the Vietnamese Student Association and Sigma Phi Epsilon were the overall winners for Shocktoberfest.

“The event was live,” Shepard said. “Wichita State will never be the same, but this is just the beginning of many more great events that SAC and other student organizations will be bringing to campus.”
