Rocking up the Rhatigan

Walking by the Rhatigan Student Center between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., a pedestrian might notice the large lunch crowd inside on any given day.

On occasion, the RSC hosts a live band or two during these lunch hours, performing inside at The Fast Break lounge, as well as on the outside patio.

The RSC Graphics and Marketing department began hiring live bands at the beginning of the semester to kick off the year in an exciting way.

Marketing coordinator Vanessa Bastian said they plan to keep the music alive by booking live bands bi-monthly to supplement the atmosphere of the campus hangout spot. The first weeks of the semester saw several bands during other events occurring outside the RSC.

“They haven’t coincided with other events on purpose,” Bastian said. “Most of the time, it’s just to make the building more lively.”

Bastian said the marketing department hasn’t even had to advertise to get live bands here.

“A lot of them are student or alumni bands,” Bastian said. “They just approach us. One [band] was coming through Wichita from California and emailed the marketing account asking if there was any place to play.”

Bastian said she is looking for a variety of music. Though a loud rock ‘n’ roll band may not exactly fit the atmosphere of The Fast Break, she said marketing plans on hiring more bands like that to play outside, leaving more acoustic sets to serenade The Fast Break and its patrons.
