Volleyball places second in Bluejay Invitational

The Wichita State women’s volleyball team traveled to Omaha, Neb., last weekend to compete in the Bluejay Invitational Tournament.

The Shockers came out of the tournament Saturday evening with a second place trophy, falling short of the championship in the fourth match of their game against Creighton University.

Head coach Chris Lamb said his team had been “super busy” in the weeks leading to the tournament.

“We tried resting a bit,” Lamb said, “but last Monday and Tuesday we really grinded it out.”

The Shockers entered the Bluejay Invitational with a 4-3 record. Their wins were increased after defeating Bowling Green and Pepperdine early in the tournament.

Personal performances from junior Ashlyn Driskill, sophomore Dani Mostrom and freshmen Mikaela Raudsepp and Emily Hiebert proved vital in the intense matches Friday against Bowling Green in the tournament’s opening night.

Driskill dished out a career-high 20 kills in the opening game while Hiebert set a career-high of 62 assists. Mostrom tied her own career-high with 30 digs.

The Shockers defeated Bowling Green in three sets, with each match getting closer and more intense than the last. The Shockers won the first two matches 25-22 and 25-23, respectively.

Bowling Green came back to tie the game with wins of 30-28 and 35-33. The Shockers recovered from the middle matches and came out on top for the final match, 16-14.

The team started off against Pepperdine on Saturday, and despite a loss in the first set, won the next three.

Once again, Driskill, Raudsepp, Hiebert and Mostrom proved their skills in the sport as they led the charge in the match against Creighton for first and second place.

The first match of the championship game proved rocky for the Shockers, losing 25-15. The team bounced back and took the second match from Creighton 25-16. From then on, the matches were close.

The Shockers fell short of the tournament title in the last two matches with scores of 27-15 and 25-19.

Freshman Abbie Lehman stepped up in the final match with 16 kills and a .538 hit ratio. Lehman, along with Driskill, was named to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of the game.

Coach Lamb expressed his desire to find a lineup that would benefit his team in the long haul of the season.

“With us being young, everything we do is going to be a challenge,” Lamb said. “The girls deserve a lineup they can sink their teeth into. If we see something might work, we will sink our teeth into that.”

The volleyball team is scheduled to play Illinois State at 7 p.m. Friday at Charles Koch Arena.
