Shockers dominate MVC start

Wichita State women’s tennis played a double header over the weekend when they travelled to Illinois State and Bradley in the same day.

The first match on Saturday was played in Bloomington, Ill., against Illinois State, which the team won 6-1 before packing up and travelling to Peoria, Ill., the same day to win 7-0.

“It was a very long day,” junior Lucia Kovalova said. “We need to play with the same level of energy and confidence at home next weekend, because every team in the conference has their eyes set on us.”

With the two victories, Wichita State is 2-0 in Missouri Valley Conference play and has finally finished the 11 straight matches away from home. WSU has not played a home match since February 17.

The Shockers won on almost every court against Illinois State, starting with doubles. WSU took the point with wins from Rebecca Pedrazzi/Montse Blasco-Fernandez 8-1 and Julia Schiller/Abby Stevens 8-6.

WSU clinched the dual match with wins from Blasco-Fernandez, Schiller and Pedrazzi. Kovalova added yet another point for WSU before ISU got their first point.

“We’ve played Illinois State in two of the last three MVC finals, so they’re a good team,” Blasco-Fernandez said. “I’m sure the next time we play them they’ll want revenge, but we’ll be ready.”

A three set match between Stevens (WSU) and Madeline Baillon (ISU) ended 6-2, 2-6, 14-12 in favor of Baillon. Veronika Blaskova won 8-3 to end the match 6-1.

The team then packed their things and travelled the 45 minutes northwest, unloading in Peoria, Ill.

Once on the courts again, the Shockers resumed their high level of play and swept the Braves 7-0.

“It was a tough day, playing those two matches and travelling in between,” Blaskova said. “Now the focus has to shift to the next matches, and we’re ready for them.”

WSU easily took the doubles point and won on every singles court. The only set dropped by the Shockers came at the No. 1 position against Schiller.

Schiller dropped her first set 4-6, but rallied to win the second 6-4 and the third 12-10.

“The support from my teammates helped me a lot and motivated me to turn my match around,” Schiller said. “It feels good to walk off the courts as a winner.”

The team next plays Southern Illinois at 9 a.m. inside Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
