Shockers shut down Cal Poly 64-37
Kadeem Coleby crushes the ball down the net off an alley-oop from Fred VanVleet in Friday’s game against the Cal Poly Mustangs. The Shockers won the game 64-37 to advance to the round of 32 Sunday.
The Wichita State Shockers continue to make history as the first team to win 35 undefeated games during a season in NCAA history. The team knocked out the California Polytechnic Mustangs 64-37 in the second round of the NCAA tournament Friday. They will play the winner of Kentucky and Kansas State on Sunday.
To them, that means they are 1-0 in the NCAA Tournament, looking to go 2-0 Sunday.
“We know about the 35-0, but we know it’s just a number,” Ron Baker said.
Cleanthony Early was the lead scorer in the game with 23 points total. Nineteen of those came in the first half. Ron Baker led on rebounds with nine while Early racked up seven.
Cal Poly’s Chris Eversley scored the first basket of the game to give the Mustangs a 3-0 lead, but back-to-back three’s by Early and Baker gave the Shockers a 6-3 lead. They never looked back.
Baker hit a three-pointer with just less than 15 minutes to start the Shockers on a 15-0 run capped off with a layup by Chadrack Lufile to give Wichita State a 16 point advantage.
Eversely said Wichita State had an interesting defense. WSU got stronger as time ran out, which Eversely called a staple of great defensive teams.
The Shockers came out of the half on a 10-4 run going into the 13:45 mark to give them a 44-17 lead. The lead allowed them to give their starters some much needed rest that will come in handy for Sunday’s game.
Those moments of rest were also an advantage for the bench, giving them some time to get comfortable on the court.
“Any time you get bench players into the game, it’s a great thing for the team,” Baker said. “Those guys work extremely hard. It’s exciting to see them get some minutes.”
Cal Poly coach Joe Callero said Wichita State looked like a power conference team and that he thinks they are going to make a good run in the tournament.
“They very, very, very rarely take any plays off,” Callero said. “Their defensive attention and focus and offensive attention and focus is excellent.”
WSU coach Gregg Marshall said Sunday will be a dog fight as they go up against the Wildcats to try to make it to the round of 32. Or, as his team would say, go 2-0.
“35-0 is awesome, but really to condense it even more, we’re talking really about being 1-0 in this tournament,” said. “And it takes six to win, takes two to get out of the weekend. And that’s our goal right now, to get out of the weekend.”
