Women’s basketball wins second consecutive MVC title
The men’s team isn’t the only one winning titles. The Wichita State’s women’s basketball team won its second consecutive Missouri Valley Conference regular-season championship with a dominant win over Missouri State on Sunday.
Head coach Jody Adams made it clear that the second championship, played on WSU’s senior day, could not have been won without the seniors on the team.
“It’s more than just that moment,” Adams said. “It’s about the players that came before that moment. There [are] a lot of emotions that go through that.”
Redshirt senior Michelle Price was one of those players. Scoring 16 points and grabbing seven rebounds, Price made her presence felt on the court.
“She brings the intangibles,” Adams said of Price. “We’re excited that she stuck around for a fifth year and was able to help us win today.”
The Shockers took a dominating 49-30 lead going into the half and never let up. They took home the championship with a 93-56 win.
“We played how we did to get the championship,” Price said. “That was our main goal.”
Adams was proud of her team as well.
“I’m happy for them,” she said. “They’re a great team.”
Even though regular-season play is over for Price, the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament still lies ahead.
“I haven’t gotten emotional yet,” Price said. “I’m just really happy right now.”
Wichita State will be the No. 2 seed in the MVC tournament, which begins on Thursday. They will play their first game at 6 p.m. Friday in St. Charles, Mo. They will play the winner of the Missouri State and Southern Illinois game.
