Shocker tennis rebounds against Cowley

After losing to No. 29 Oklahoma State nearly a week ago, No. 65 Wichita State men’s tennis team swept Cowley to the tune of 7-0.

In doubles play,  the Shockers were able to push Cowley around the court with apparent ease. Tomislav Gregurovic and teamate Tin Ostojic won their match 8-2. Finishing at nearly the same time was the duo of Guillermo Nicol/Guillermo de Vilchez, who won their match 8-1.

Singles play began after a short break, but unfortunately for the Tigers the Shockers picked up right where they left off.

Jocelyn Devilliers (WSU), playing at the five position, was the first off the courts when he double bageled his opponent, Ryan Hoverson, winning 6-0, 6-0.

“Everybody stayed focused on their matches,” Devilliers said.

Ibian Hodgson was able to push the Shocker lead to 3-0 when he beat Carlos Rodrigues 6-1, 6-1. The match was clinched shortly after when Nicol won 6-0, 6-4 over Joshua Coleman.

“I think we were able to play well because we ate a good breakfast,” Hodgson said. “We were just focused on winning every point.”

Even with the match clinched the teams chose to play on to give players practice. Gregurovic won his match 6-4, 6-2 and de Vilchez beat his opponent 6-1, 6-4.

The last match of the day to finish was at the one position with Ostojic playing against Harry Busby. Busby was able to give Cowley their only set win when he pushed Ostojic to a third set. Tin would go on to win 6-1, 5-7, 10-3.

“It felt great playing outside for the first time this spring,” Devilliers said. “But now we have to be prepared for Saturday and hopefully we repeat today’s performance.”

WSU is set to continue their home stand on Saturday as they will play Oral Roberts at noon and Washburn at 4 p.m. Both matches will take place at Genesis Health Club on Rock Road in Wichita.
