Softball loses three of four games in San Antonio

Wichita State softball travelled to the University of Texas (UT) at San Antonio this past weekend in hopes of continuing their winning streak. Unfortunately for the Shockers, they dropped three of their four games.

Things were relatively quiet in the first game against Rutgers, as the Scarlet Knights stood at 2-1. In the top of the third inning, Rutgers came out swinging with their first batter, Loren Williams homering to center field.

Rutgers would go on to score four in the third inning, add three more runs in the following two innings and ultimately win 9-1.

In the second game of the tournament, WSU played against host school UT- San Antonio. The Roadrunners led 1-0 following a Jori Fox single. WSU would tie the game after Cacy Williams scored on a wild pitch. Williams was gradually moved around the bases with a good bit of coaching from Kristi Bredbenner. Williams reached on a throwing error and was advanced twice to put her in position to tie.

WSU took their first lead after a single from WSU’s Paige Mason to score Paige Luellen. UT-Arlington tied the game at 2-2 with a homer from Crawford in the bottom of the 7th inning.

After a defensive battle WSU regained the lead, 3-2, behind a single from Kelli Spring that they did not relinquish and won in 10 innings.

“Held my breath for the last three innings but we got the W,” WSU senior Erin Carney said via twitter after the game.

“Sometimes a win can be ugly,” said WSU head coach Kristi Bredbenner. “But a win is a win. Everyone contributed.”

Next on the schedule was Oklahoma State. The game was tied 2-2 after OSU’s Danielle Riddle hit a two-run double to left center and WSU’s Williams responded with two-run shot to center field.

In the top of the second inning OSU’s bats came alive and behind multiple singles they regained the lead 6-2. WSU could not respond and the Cowgirls won 9-2.

In the final game of the tournament WSU was matched up against Colorado State. The Rams were leading 2-0 through four innings. In the fifth Macklin Hitz reached on a fielders choice and was batted home by Ali Vandever’s triple to cut the Ram lead in half.

After an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning and a grand slam from Chelsea O’Connor in the sixth, Colorado State led 8-1. Even though WSU’s Mason hit a two RBI home run to left field they could not complete the comeback and lost 8-3.

WSU softball will travel to Tallahassee, Fla. to take part in the Unconquered Classic next Friday, Feb. 21. Their first opponent will be University of California Santa Barbara. They play at 2 p.m.
