Shockers go 21-0 after win against Drake

The Wichita State Shockers beat the Drake Bulldogs 78-61 Saturday night to give the Shockers their 21st win of the season. Tekele Cotton had what was arguably the highlight of the game, slamming down a big one-handed alley-oop from Ron Baker with 30 seconds left in the first half.

In Tuesday night’s game against Illinois State, Cotton made a high-flying dunk that found him at the number two spot on the ESPN top 10 list for the night. Cotton went four-for-six in Saturday’s game, putting up eight points in the win.

The first half of the game saw the Shockers and Bulldogs evenly matched, battling three-point baskets back and forth. Baker and Cleanthony Early both scored two three-pointers in the first half.

Early shot 75 percent from the line, and was lead scorer with 19 points and seven rebounds in the game. Baker went two-for-six on three’s and scored 14 points.

Cotton made the final basket of the half with his highlight dunk sending the Shockers into the lockers up 37-29.

Cotton kicked off the second half of play with a follow up dunk.

Baker made a layup and free throw to start WSU on a 9-3 run, finished off with a layup by Fred VanVleet with 12:11 left in the game.

With 4:45 Early put up his last basket of the game to give WSU their biggest lead of the night 50-75.

After being plagued by slow starts during their undefeated season, the Shockers looked more solid in the first half than most starts this season.

Coach Gregg Marshall said the team started the game well and finished it off better.

“It wasn’t a perfect game but obviously it was pretty good,” Marshall said.

The Shockers will hope to have their 22nd win of the season Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Loyola in Charles Koch Arena.
