Shockers soar over Golden Eagles, move to 9-0
Solid team effort on offense and defense helped the Shocker men’s basketball team defeat Oral Roberts 71-58 and remain undefeated.
Struggling offensively in the first half, the Shockers shot for 22 percent from the field. The Shockers went to the locker room behind Oral Roberts 30-22.
“I thought we had great energy early on but bottom line, we just were missing shots,” Sophomore Fred VanVleet said.
Starting the second half, the Shockers came back read to get back into the game. Answering back to an 8-point defecate, Chadrack Lufile and Cleanthony Early made an easy bucket. By hitting back-to-back three-pointers, they brought the game within two points.
Capitalizing on the early streak, the Shockers pulled away from the Golden Eagles and pushed the lead to the end of the contest.
“They showed why they are a top ten team,” said Oral Roberts head coach Scott Sutton. “I give them credit. They got it going in the second half.”
The Shockers had a total of four members in double figures including Early, Lufile, Tekele Cotton and Darius Carter.
Fred VanVleet had a total of six assists with zero turnovers against the Golden Eagles.
On Saturday, Dec. 14, the Shockers host Tennessee at INTRUST Bank Arena. Last season, the Shockers started at 9-0 and lost their first game against the Volunteers. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will air on ESPN2.
“How effective they are and how well they play will go a long way to determining the outcome,” said Shocker head coach Gregg Marshall.
