Shocktoberfest ends the week with Songfest
It has been said that loose lips sink ships, but in Monday night’s case, loose lips were syncing to musical melodies.
Performers from Wichita State’s Greek community took to the Metroplex stage to close out this year’s Shocktoberfest celebration with Songfest. Roy Moye, a previous Hippodrome special attraction winner and aerospace engineering senior, emceed the night, ad-libbing and performing a crowd-pleasing version of “Superstition,” by Stevie Wonder.
Nine fraternities and sororities competed in Songfest, performing in front of a packed crowd of family members and WSU students, mostly Greek students.
Czarina Cutaran, a sophomore and member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, watched the event for the first time with members of her sorority and other friends.
“I had so much fun,” Cutaran said. “It was cool to see all of the Greek community.”
The groups performed for five minutes each and lip-synced and danced to songs of their choice, with points awarded by judges. Some of the acts embraced the theme of this year’s Shocktoberfest, “ObSeussed with Shocktoberfest,” by incorporating the characters into their routines, while others did not.
Moye introduced the first group as “the true gentlemen of Sigma Alpha Epsilon,” who started off the night with a mash-up of hip-hop, dubstep, Justin Timberlake and *NSYNC tunes.
Later in the evening, the men of Beta Theta Pi launched into their popular routine after Moye read their introduction card, naming their dance a “tribute to the booty.” The performance included songs such as “My Humps,” by the Black Eyed Peas and “Bootylicious,” by Destiny’s Child. Trace Adkins’ “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk,” brought applause and squeals from the women in the audience, who watched as the men danced wearing nothing more than cutoff shorts and cropped tops.
Sororities Delta Delta Delta, Gamma Phi Beta and Delta Gamma stayed more with the Seuss theme, including multiple Grinches, Cats in Hats, Loraxes, and Thing 1 and Thing 2. Fraternity Delta Upsilon performed the recent viral hits “Wrecking Ball,” by Miley Cyrus and “What Does the Fox Say,” by Ylvis.
Phi Delta Theta took the audience back with *NSYNC, M.C. Hammer and Michael Jackson numbers, while Alphi Phi, for the most part, stuck with newer material, including Lady Gaga’s “Applause,” and Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow.” Fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon had the crowd up and clapping along with their version of Usher’s “More,” and finished the night by bringing down the house with moves from the dance movie “Stomp the Yard.”
While the judges tallied scores, Shocktoberfest’s Man and Woman of the year were announced. Drew Bonner, a junior biology major, and Lauren Durano, a senior majoring in marketing and economics, won the honors.
Finally, Moye announced that the winners of Songfest were Sigma Phi Epsilon and Delta Gamma. The fraternity and sorority were also the overall winners of the Shocktoberfest points competition.
