Students package food for Stop Hunger Now campaign
On Tuesday afternoon, Shockers provided relief for hungry families by packaging meals. The goal was to package 10,000 meals in an event organized by Stop Hunger Now and Student Involvement.
“This event is part of a million meal Kansas challenge,” said Jolynn Berk, community development director for the Stop Hunger Now campaign. She said the idea came from the Universities Fighting World Hunger Summit in March.
Wichita State and other Kansas universities decided to collectively work together to do something that would have a big impact.
Berk said the problem with hunger isn’t about a lack of food. She said the world produces more than enough food for everyone to eat, but the problem lies in the distribution of the food and politics.
Participants worked in teams to package rice, soybeans, dehydrated vegetables and a vitamin seasoning designed specifically for people with malnutrition. A gong was hit after every 1,000 meals were packaged.
Students involved felt like it was for a good cause and great way to give back.
“If we can get a lot of people to help then it can really impact the hunger situation,” said freshman Wyatt Clark.
The majority of the food will go to transformation development programs like school feeding programs, vocational programs and orphanages. A portion of the food will be set aside for disaster relief efforts.
