Guitar Ensemble and Jazz Arts on stage tonight
If you want a place to enjoy a guitar ensemble and some jazz music, look no further than Wichita State.
The WSU Guitar Ensemble, followed by the WSU Jazz Arts Ensemble, performs tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Miller Concert Hall.
Luke Young, a member of the jazz ensemble, said music of all varieties will be performed.
“We’ll be playing more contemporary type of jazz, as well as some more down-to-earth swing stuff,” Young said. “We’ve got a Thad Jones part in there and a Radiohead tune that’s been redone for jazz bands.”
Young plays the lead alto saxophone in the jazz group. He’s been in the group for four years, since the second semester of his freshman year.
Tickets for the concert tonight are free for WSU students with ID, if obtained in advance. The tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts Box Office in the Duerksen Fine Arts Center. Otherwise, tickets cost $7. This will be the first jazz concert for the school year. Young said the groups have been working on the music since the start of the year.
“We had auditions the first week, and then we started rehearsing on Friday of that first week,” he said.
Geoffrey Deibel is the conductor of the jazz ensemble and will be seen tonight leading the band. However, he won’t be conducting like a symphonic band conductor would.
“Typically, he gives direction in rehearsals, and when it comes to time for the actual concert, he will conduct certain bits,” Young said. “It’s very, very minimal conducting, not like a typical concert.”
More performances will be later in the week. The jazz ensemble performs at 2 p.m. Saturday in Fairmount Park for the annual Back to the Park Festival.
Young is looking forward to the concert.
“Come out,” he said, “and enjoy.”
