Freshman guard undergoes surgery

Men’s basketball freshman guard D.J. Bowles underwent heart surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. to install an implantable cardio defibrillator (ICD) on Thursday morning.

Bowles was rushed to the hospital on the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 3 during a team practice. He was treated at Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis. A diagnosis was not made after tests were performed. He was released from the hospital on Sunday, Sept. 8 and traveled to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. to undergo additional testing.

According to the press release, Fagan used an AED and performed CPR on Bowles prior to the emergency medical personnel arrived to the Koch Arena.

“I want to commend athletic trainer Todd Fagan, our athletic training staff, and emergency medical personnel, for quick and professional response exhibited in dealing with D.J.’s situation,” Director of Athletics Eric Sexton said in a press release. “In addition, a thank you to our partner, Via Christi, for the care they provided, and to the doctors and staff at the Mayo Clinic who have been providing care to D.J. All of our thoughts go out to D.J., his family, and our men’s basketball program.”

It is unknown if Bowles will return to the court in time for the upcoming season.

“This young man has spent his whole life trying to become a basketball player, and he is a really good player,” Men’s Basketball Head Coach Gregg Marshall said in a press release. “More importantly, he’s a super nice kid from a great family. We’re doing our diligence to make sure we can best serve him for the rest of his life, not just his career.”
