Phi Delta Theta raises money for ALS research

While many may not have to cope with the effects of ALS, Phi Delta Theta supports those who do. They are inviting the community to help them in their fight by attending the Dullea Charity Classic.

The philanthropic events include a party scheduled for 7 p.m. tomorrow at Tallgrass Country Club. In addition to the party, the fraternity is also hosting a golf tournament.

“Anyone that has been affected by ALS [amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease] is welcome to attend,” said Caleb Newsom, the chairman organizing the events.

The party is free, but buying raffle tickets is encouraged. They will be sold 1 for $5 and 5 for $20. There will also be live music and hor d’oeuvres.

The party will include a live and silent auction. A few of the items being auctioned off include two hunting trips to Flint Oak Private Hunting Club, four signed Final Four basketballs and a Crown Uptown dinner package with a limousine ride.

The money raised will go directly to the ALS Association. Matt Brain, alumni of the house and former chairman, will be a keynote speaker. This year, the party is dedicated to the memory of Clark Jackson, a victim of ALS and former adviser to the local fraternity.

On Monday, Phi Delta Theta is hosting a golf tournament, also at Tallgrass Country Club. The tournament begins at 7:30 a.m. and is set to end at 12:30 p.m.

The event was started by a request from the former Delta Delta Delta housemother, Mary Jane Dullea, whose husband died from ALS in 1990. Phi Delta Theta nationally supports the ALS association.

“With a direct link to this horrible disease at Wichita State, it has led us to a deeper impact and motivation” said Blake Summers, a member on the committee organizing the event.

The men of Phi Delta Theta have grown the Dullea Classic into one of the nation’s largest student-run philanthropic events.

This will be the 23rd annual Dullea Classic, making it one of the longest running philanthropies on campus.
