Dean and director honored by community

Some of the most successful people don’t have “recognition” on their list of goals, but for those who make a genuine impact in their field of work, it can be a fortunate side effect.

The Wichita Business Journal annually recognizes local women who make a difference in their communities through their work and local involvement. This year, two of Wichita State’s own were granted the honor.

Cindy Claycomb, Ph.D., interim dean of the Barton School of Business, and Connie Dietz, Director of Cooperative Education and Work Based Learning, were recipients of the 2013 Women in Business award.

Claycomb, who recently took on a new role as the interim dean of the Barton school, has long been active in the Wichita community and WSU. After 12 years in the marketing industry, she wanted a change and pursued an assistant professor position in marketing at WSU. That was 19 years ago.

Along the way, Claycomb learned to better vocalize her opinions in order to cause community change.

“I’ve discovered that when you’re involved, that’s the only way they’re going to hear your voice,” she said.

For Claycomb, speaking out is the best way to orchestrate change. It also requires involvement.

“If you’re not involved, your voice isn’t heard,” she said.

During the next year, she will work as a member of the Board of Parks Committee and as dean of the Barton school. Her years of business and community service experiences have helped elevate her to a position she feels suits her.

“Right now I’m enjoying this opportunity to serve the university and the Barton school,” Claycomb said.

“She’s fun and very detailed,” said Joan Adkisson, assistant to the dean. “She’s committed to making the Barton School a better place.”

As a WSU alumna, in the Cooperative Education office, Dietz has come full circle in her career. She taught elementary school before moving into sales and marketing. Later, she combined the two fields by working for the Wichita Chamber of Commerce where she developed an initiative of collaboration between the Wichita school district and local businesses.

She again combined her experience in her role as the Co-op director.

“I think it’s a good blending of my talents and knowledge,” Dietz said.

Associate Director of Cooperative Education Sara Muzzy has enjoyed working alongside Dietz for the last five years.

“Connie wants everyone to succeed, and she gives us the tools to be successful,” Muzzy said. “It’s refreshing to work with someone with so much passion for what she does.”

Dietz recently finished serving on the Wichita Board of Education after 14 years. Switching gears to focus more on the university, she is currently serving on the Engineering Dean search committee.

Dietz and Claycomb worked together last year on the Strategic Planning committee for WSU. Each is passionate about their position and involvement at the university.

“I love working here at WSU,” Dietz said. “I think it is the best of both worlds. I get to interact with young adults, which keeps me energized, challenges me and keeps me constantly looking forward.”
