Newly-ranked No. 74 Shockers handle Washburn and Oral Roberts
Two opponents, one result.
Men’s tennis has a new trend: win the doubles points and take the day. The Wichita State Shockers took action Friday against Washburn and Saturday against Oral Roberts. WSU won both matches 7-0.
Friday’s match gave WSU little opposition early, with the Shockers winning all three doubles matches quickly and decisively (8-4, 8-2, 8-3).
“Hopefully we can make it more competitive,” Washburn’s assistant coach Jamie Backim said early in the day.
With wins at Air Force and No. 53 Denver, WSU is happy to ride the momentum back home.
“We won the doubles point at Air Force and Denver,” WSU coach Brad Louderback said about their Feb. 22 and Feb. 23 matches. “We didn’t get it at Nebraska, didn’t do quite what we hoped there.”
The singles matches last weekend looked about as competitive as the doubles, with one exception. Junior Ilija Cuic dropped the first set 6-1 and had to rely on great conditioning to hang around. Cuic found his groove in the second set and won 6-3. He would eventually take the tie break 10-6 to seal the perfect victory for the Shockers.
Saturday’s performance was just as impressive from the WSU squad.
“It’s the plan to grab that early point,” Louderback said.
All three doubles teams beat the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles, 8-2.
“Their serve left them open and we were able to come to the net,” sophomore Alvaro Gutierrez said.
“We were just more focused,” echoed WSU team captain Matheus Pereira. “We were able to play more aggressive.”
Pereira, who was named captain this season as the only senior, led by example on Saturday, also grabbing his singles match (6-1, 6-0). The WSU team only dropped one game in the second set of their singles matches. The closest set ended 6-2 in favor of WSU.
“From start to finish it was a good match for us today, and it’s going to help us, I hope, stay prepared for the rest of the season,” Louderback said. “We’ve got tough ones coming up.”
With only two of the next five matches at home, WSU certainly has to keep the momentum this month. Shockers continue play Wednesday at home against Newman University before heading to Stillwater, Okla., to face a tough Oklahoma State squad.
