Shocker athelte honored for her skill

Montse Blasco Fernandez, a Junior, was named The Valley women’s tennis player of the week early yesterday afternoon for her two wins in singles play.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever gotten that,” said Blasco Fernandez, “I’ve been really focused this season, just trying to get points even though [the team has] been struggling while getting over some injuries.”

Montse was able to help the Shockers defeat the College of Charleston 5-2 with a singles victory over Samantha Maddox, 6-4, 6-2. Montse was also able to find success despite a team loss against No. 59 Missouri where she grabbed WSU’s only point with a win over Elisha Gabb, 6-3, 5-7, 10-8.

“Montse has consistently worked hard and improved all year long, her whole career here really,” women’s head tennis coach Colin Foster said, “As a junior she’s developing into a great leader for us. She had two really nice wins against strong opposition.”

Montse leads the team with an impressive 16-8 record in singles matches; she has won her last three and seven of her last ten. The Shockers look to find a couple team wins when they travel to Iowa to take on conference opponents UNI and Drake April 6 and 7.
