Shocker baseball gets underway with annual banquet
The first pitch thrown by the Wichita State baseball team Monday was not made during a game.
The annual First Pitch banquet offered a night of recognition and celebration as WSU’s team kicked off its 2013 season.
Kansas City Royals Manager Ned Yost was the featured speaker.
“This is Royals territory down here so I just wanted to be a part of it,” Yost said. “[Wichita State] is nationally known.”
Also there to encourage the Shockers and reunite with former coaches was former Shocker All-American and Detroit Tiger’s outfielder, Andy Dirks.
“I played with the Shockers for two years. Being back brings back a lot of memories,” Dirks said. “It was exciting. It’s kind of a dream you have as a little kid and when it finally comes through, it’s a pretty special moment.”
He also participated with the Tigers in the 2012 World Series.
Many Shocker players were awarded for excellence during last season including Garrett Bayliff, Dayne Parker, Kevin Hall, Johnny Coy and Kris Gardner. The team is already practicing preparing for the season starting next month.
To draw the event to a close, 36-year baseball coach Gene Stephenson spoke about the upcoming season and what it will take to be excellent this year.
“I think we have a great bunch of guys really dedicated to make good things happen,” said Stephenson.
Mike Kennedy emceed the event. Director of Athletics Eric Sexton began the event with an Invocation. Carraba’s, Bonefish Grill, and Abuelo’s catered the event.
WSU’s season starts Feb. 15 with a 3 p.m. home game against Pittsburg at Eck Stadium.
