Fan clinic gives fans taste of upcoming season
The Wichita State men’s basketball team’s fans converged at Koch Arena on Sunday for an opportunity to check out the team in its preseason workout. About 100 fans attended the fan clinic.
Fans had the opportunity to witness practice, which is typically closed to the public. Coach Gregg Marshall was heard by those in attendance through a wireless microphone, giving fans an actual practice experience.
WSU items were sold through a silent auction including photographs of past Shockers such as Garrett Stutz, David Kyles and Gabe Blair.
T-shirts and memorabilia were also for sale, and fans could stick around to score player autographs and engage in a question and answer session with Marshall.
Long-time Shocker fan Eldon Hamm and his wife Paula traveled from Ellinwood, Kan., for the fan clinic Sunday.
“We’re very excited, pumped up for the season and we wanted to see how this all played out,” Hamm said. “If (Marshall) can get the chemistry working, they’ll have a good team.”
The chemistry seemed to be working during practice, and the team looked well acquainted despite numerous new faces.
Michael McGaugh and his son Cade also attended the clinic to watch their favorite Shocker players in the preseason practice.
“I like Carl Hall because he’s a good influence and he’s just good,” said Cade, an 11-year-old local basketball player who plans on attending games with a Carl Hall sign in hand.
Even WSU President John Bardo stopped by Koch Arena for the fan clinic.
“We knew that they were going to be practicing, so we thought we’d come over and take a look because we haven’t got to watch them yet,” Bardo said.
Bardo and the rest of the Shocker fans will have another opportunity to watch the men’s basketball team at Shocker Madness, Thursday at 7 p.m. in Koch Arena.
