Volleyball extends win streak to four

The Wichita State volleyball team defeated Missouri State in Springfield on Friday, its fourth win in a row, which keeps the team within first place in the Missouri Valley Conference.

The Shockers won 3-1. Scores were 20-25, 25-18, 25-23 and 25-21.

Sam Sanders led the Shockers with 15 kills.

The win keeps the Shockers (14-5, 7-2 MVC) in third place in the conference, a game back of Creighton and Northern Iowa.

There are nine games remaining in the Shockers’ regular season, including five at home. Next on the agenda are games at Southern Illinois (16-4, 6-3 MVC) and Evansville (7-15, 2-7 MVC) this Friday and Saturday.

 


Date set for annual Shocker Madness

It’s about to get crazy in Charles Koch Arena.

With official practices underway, Wichita State basketball fans will get to see the Shockers in action for the first time at the annual “Shocker Madness” event at 5 p.m. on Oct. 25 in Koch arena.

There will be live scrimmages from both the men’s and women’s basketball teams, along with an autograph session, dunk contest and dance team performance.

Also, the men’s team will be given its 2012 Missouri Valley Conference championship rings.

Concession stands will be open during the duration of the event. “Shocker Madness” is free and open to the public.

 


Women’s golf impresses with fourth-place finish

The Wichita State women’s golf team took fourth place in the 15-team field at the MSU/Payne Stewart Invitational on Tuesday.

The Shockers’ 54-hole score of 920 (313-298-309) is the team’s lowest of the season and the fourth best in the history of the program.

The tournament, which was played at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Mo., was won by Arkansas-Little Rock. Fellow Missouri Valley Conference school and tournament host Missouri State took second.

Freshman Bryce Schroeder led the Shockers with her 224 (74-75-75), enough for fourth place. Senior Hannah Martin finished in a tie for 5th with her 225 (76-73-76).

The Shockers will be in Buies Creek, N.C., next week for the Fighting Camel Classic, their final tournament of the fall season.

 


Men’s golf stands tall against tough competition

The Wichita State men’s golf team tied for sixth at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, hosted by the nation’s No.1-ranked team, California-Berkeley.

The 16-team field featured some of the nation’s best teams, including nationally ranked Oregon State, which finished tied with the Shockers.

WSU shot a 1-under 851 (278-281-292) for the tournament. California won the tournament by 20 strokes with its 46-under 806 (265-268-273).

Leading the Shockers was sophomore Louis Cohen Boyer with his 6-under 207 (70-66-71) to finish tied for ninth. Tying for 19th was senior Rafael Becker, who shot a 1-under 212 (69-69-74).

Winning the tournament was California’s Brandon Hagy with a 15-under 198 (64-62-72).

The Shockers will wrap up fall play next week at the New Mexico State Herb Wimberly Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M.
