RSC construction puts future of Community Garden at risk

The Wichita State community garden is located on the east side of the Rhatigan Student Center.

Students walking around the construction fence surrounding the Rhatigan Student Center may have noticed something seemingly out of place amid the dirt piles and heavy machinery.

Wichita State has its own vegetable garden.

The WSU Community Garden, maintained by the Physical Plant, supplies fresh vegetables throughout the summer and early fall that people at WSU can pick up for free at designated times.

The Physical Plant has thought about removing it due to location issues caused by the construction. Campus Issues Committee Chairman Steven Haneveld and the rest of his committee are working to keep the garden on campus.

“I just want to maintain, if not grow the garden, that way we can keep the students engaged,” Haneveld said.

Formerly located across from the main entrance of the RSC, near the bust of Eisenhower, the garden was moved to its current plot in front of Grace Memorial Chapel. This location still isn’t perfect. The fence around the RSC cut through the garden this summer.

If the garden is moved, Haneveld wants to work with other student organizations to host garden-centered events.

“If we get to keep the garden, we can possibly hold events. We could make fresh salsa, and have a nice, good time,” he said.

Those interested in picking up fresh vegetables can do so on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9:15. Current crops include peppers and rhubarb. Be sure to “Bring your Bag.”
