Women advance to championship in weekend tournament, men victorious over South Carolina

The women’s tennis team advanced to the championship of the ITA Kickoff Weekend Invitational after defeating No. 61 Minnesota, 4-1.

The No. 37 Shockers fell to No. 10 Texas A&M in the championship, 3-4. Wichita State fell short of pulling the upset victory when the Aggies captured victories in the final two matches of singles to claim victory.

Junior Aleksandra Trifunovic won a deciding point in the final singles match to hold serve and take a 5-4 lead. Yet the Aggies own Eva Paalma squared up the match, striking in do-or-die fashion to tie things up. Paalma would ultimately closeout the final match, surviving 6-5.

The women next face Oklahoma State at 1 p.m Saturday in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

The men recorded their first loss of the season, falling to Ohio State 4-0. The Buckeyes entered the match as the No. 9 team in the country.

Miroslav Herzan and Haru Inoue recorded a doubles victory against an Ohio State team featuring No. 24 Mikael Torpegaard. The Shockers won 6-2, but Ohio State took the overall victory based on team points earned in the singles and doubles competition.

The men rebounded off their first blemish of the season, a 3-1 record, to strike up victory against South Carolina, 4-2. Three Shockers were victorious in singles competition.

In doubles, two Wichita State teams were victorious. Tin Ostojic and Jocelyn Devilliers won their match 6-2 and Miroslav Herzan and Haru Inoue also won, 8-2.

The men next take on Purdue at 4 p.m. Saturday at Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
