Missouri State bears down on Shocker Volleyball

The Wichita State women’s volleyball team made their way to Springfield, Mo., over the weekend to face the Missouri State Bears. Despite many players setting personal records, the Shockers were defeated 3-2 in a best of five series.

Wichita State started strong in the first set, obtaining an 8-1 lead until the Bears fought their way back to a three-point spread with an 11-8 score.

Katie Dudzinski had a momentum-changing kill that brought the Shockers up to 18-14, however, the Bears responded with another rally to bring the score to 18-17.

The Shockers stayed focused, taking advantage of a 5-0 streak, but Missouri State tied the game at 24 after scoring seven of eight points.

Wichita State won the first set 26-24, but would fall in the second set 20-25 regardless of seven tied scores and four lead changes.

In the second set, points were traded between the teams until the Bears inched their way forward to a score of 11-8.

Shockers Katie Reilly and Jenny Whitledge both played their part, giving Wichita State much needed kills later in the game. But Missouri State scored eight out of ten points and would close the game at 20-25, despite the Shockers hitting .257.

Wichita State fought tenaciously in the third set until the Bears got the three-point lead at 13-10.

After the Bears’ lead, Wichita State crumbled as Missouri State used multiple streaks to keep the Shockers no closer than six points away through out the rest of the set.

MSU finished the game 25-18 having their best hitting average of the night at .344.

Wichita State fought back in the fourth set and gained a 12-7 lead by utilizing blocks from Jaclyn Roddy and Abbie Lehman.

Lehman helped the Shockers again with a kill, pulling them ahead 19-13.

A kill by Reilly gave Wichita State the win of 25-22 after the Bears got within three points at 21-18.

The fifth set was not as fruitful for the Shockers as they only hit .037 compared to their .308 average in the fourth set.

Missouri State used this low average to their advantage by having five straight kills with no Shocker rebuttal after the Shockers’ initial 3-1 lead.

After this, the Bears used four hitting errors by the Shockers to push them ahead 13-6.

Missouri State ended up winning the last set 15-10 and increased their record to 5-2 in conference play.

While this marks another loss for the Shockers, some players have seen new career-highs.

These new highs include Lehman tying her career-high with 16 kills and hitting .500, Whitledge with 15 kills and 13 digs, Roddy with nine kills hitting .308, Emily Hiebert with 41 assists and 18 digs and finally Dani Mostrom with 19 digs.

WSU is now fourth place in the MVC. The team plays again at 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at Southern Illinois.
