SGA president, vice president candidates to debate Friday
Three parties in the running for student body president and student body vice president will voice their opinions Friday evening in the annual Student Government Association debate.
Current SGA senator Ruben Lebron, as senior, is running for student body president on the Shockers United ticket, while fellow SGA senator Matthew Brinkmeyer is running for vice president. Their platform is based on the issue of campus security, Shocker advancement and effective communication.
Junior Mariah Smith — who is the current SGA treasurer — is running on the Spark ticket as student body president, with senior Michael Schultz as her running mate, who now serves as a business senator. Their platform is based on accountability, connections and teamwork, as well as enhancing the student experience, increasing outreach to students, and developing the education of SGA senators.
On the Progress ticket, current Student Body President Joseph Shepard, a senior, is running for re-election, alongside vice president candidate Taben Azad — a senior who serves as chairman of Campus Issues for SGA. Shepard and Azad’s platform is based on engagement, empowering students and enhancing the Shocker experience, with emphasis on addressing student safety, student health and student life.
The town hall debate will begin at 6 p.m. Friday in the Harvest Room of the Rhatigan Student Center.
